Why become an egg or sperm donor?

Being an egg or sperm donor is an act of solidarity towards all those women and couples who, for various reasons, cannot conceive a baby with their own gametes.  The voluntary participation of egg and sperm donors is essential to make this reproductive desire a reality.

Each person has his or her own reasons for being a donor, but all are equally valid.

Who can be an egg donor?

Egg donors are young women between the ages of 18 and 35, who must meet the following requirements: a satisfactory psychological evaluation, no family history of genetic diseases, good general health, and negative test results for common sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis B and C, and syphilis. In addition, an exhaustive study of hereditary diseases is carried out to guarantee the genetic health of the future baby.

Who can be a sperm donor?

To be a sperm donor you must be between 18 and 35 years old, in good physical and mental health, and free of communicable diseases such as HIV, hepatitis B and C, and syphilis, as well as genetic diseases and no family history of hereditary alterations. A thorough medical and psychological evaluation is performed and a healthy lifestyle is required. Donors must provide informed consent and are limited to conceiving a maximum of six children nationwide.

Maximum confidentiality

Egg and sperm donation is a free, formal and confidential contract between the donor and the authorised centre. Both the gamete bank, as well as the registers of donors and the centres themselves, are obliged to guarantee the confidentiality of the donors’ identity data. Notwithstanding this, recipients and their offspring have the right to obtain general information about the donors, which does not include their identity. Likewise, in extraordinary circumstances involving certain danger to the life or health of the child, or when appropriate in accordance with the criminal procedural laws, the identity of the donors may be revealed, on a restricted basis and without ever modifying the previously established relationship.
