At Clínica Tambre we’re always at our patient’s service. If there’s something which we believe can enhance a fertility treatment, we incorporate it. That’s how we, after some time of preparation and research, started counting on Maria Luz Ordaz, a professional dedicated to acupuncture. Patients who need or wish to complement their treatment with this technique can attend consultations on Mondays and Wednesdays from 09.30 to 11.30.
In the following interview, our newly recruited acupuncturist answers the most frequent questions on the subject, contributing to a better understanding of the technique for those who are not yet familiar with complementary therapies.
For those who’ve never heard about it, what is acupuncture exactly, and what relation does it have to Chinese medicine?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) involves ancient methods over 5000 years old, including various disciplines like phytotherapy, Tui Na, Qigong and acupuncture. Acupuncture is the art of balancing the body by inserting needles at different points of the body.
Tell us about yourself as a professional, what is it that you like most about your job?
What fascinates me the most about my job is the fact that it never ceases to surprise me. I have a degree in medicine and, although I started in pharmaceutical marketing, it didn’t take long before I turned to natural techniques. After reading a book by a well-known psychiatrist describing how to induce a relaxing effect in patients by inserting needles into the body, I decided to enrol in TCM to witness this for myself. What started as a simple curiosity, now grew out as to what I consider one of the best decisions I have taken in my life. I’ve been dedicated to acupuncture for ten years now, with incredible results.
Why are holistic and complementary therapies important in the field of assisted reproduction?
I believe that anything that contributes to the wellbeing of the patient is welcome. In my experience, people who go for fertility treatments exhibit insecurity, fear, frustration etc. These factors can influence your hormonal cycle, which could even harm the fertility treatment.
Acupuncture can help to control not only the anxiety and stress of the patient, but can also regulate hormonal cycles. With the help of a diagnosis from TCM, one can take action during the follicular phase, in ovulation or in the luteal phase. This way, the patient’s conditions are optimised for a satisfactory result after treatment. Besides, acupuncture benefits males extremely well too.
Allegedly therapies such as acupuncture are more accepted and widespread in places like the United Kingdom, do you agree? Do you often encounter scepticism here in Spain?
It is true that techniques like acupuncture are more widespread and accepted by the population in countries elsewhere. Personally, I think that there’s a lot of ignorance in general, the unfamiliar always seems to be preceded by suspicion. I am very glad to see how people from all walks of life visit my practice every day, trusting me with their worries. They themselves recommend me to their relatives, friends, acquaintances etc. to help them with their ailments.
What drives you to start a new adventure with us? What’s your experience in Tambre like?
What attracted me the most about Clínica Tambre were its surroundings, as everything seems to be adapted to reach optimal patient comfort. Every last detail is taken care of, which was a pleasant surprise. We live in a society in which it seems we’re only ‘just another number’, upon entering Tambre I felt a great empathy for the patient. For that, I know that I will be surrounded by great professionals.
