Tambre uses radiofrequency to treat fibroids and optimise treatment times

Dr Laura and Esther with the new system for removing fibroids

At Tambre, we are pioneers in personalised reproductive medicine that is both effective and profoundly respectful of women’s bodies – and their time. Our approach to assisted reproduction is shaped by decades of experience, continuous innovation and a genuine commitment to care, support, and helping dreams come true.

Staying true to our forward-thinking spirit, we have recently incorporated an innovative technique that is already making a difference in the lives of many patients: radiofrequency treatment to reduce certain uterine fibroids.

Thanks to this cutting-edge technology, we have successfully carried out our first radiofrequency procedure as part of a fertility treatment. In this case, the patient had a fibroid that was interfering with embryo transfer. Our Medical Director, Dr Laura García de Miguel, highlights the advantages of this approach, noting that it is minimally invasive and significantly improves both health outcomes and pregnancy prospects:

“This technique allows us to avoid surgery in selected cases, reducing the risks associated with infections, bleeding or postoperative complications. In our first case, the procedure was performed on an outpatient basis, with no need for hospital admission or general anaesthesia, and the patient was able to return home just a few hours later”.

What is radiofrequency and how does it work on uterine fibroids?

Radiofrequency is a non-surgical, outpatient technique used to treat uterine fibroids that are less than 7 cm in diameter and accessible via the vaginal canal. Under mild sedation and ultrasound guidance, a fine needle connected to a radiofrequency generator is inserted. The generator emits heat through the tip of the needle, producing a controlled necrosis (targeted destruction) of the fibroid tissue, which the body gradually reabsorbs.

The entire procedure takes around 40 minutes, is painless and does not cause bleeding. Most patients are able to resume their normal routine the following day.

Fibroids and fertility: a safe, effective option for selected cases

While not all fibroids are suitable for this treatment, Dr García de Miguel underscores its great potential in specific situations:

“At Tambre, fibroids are not extremely common, but when they do appear, they can impact the success of fertility treatment. In some cases, these fibroids are difficult to treat surgically or would lead to a significant delay in the reproductive plan. This system offers a safe, swift and minimally invasive alternative”.

A growing body of research and clinical evidence suggests that uterine fibroids may contribute to infertility, particularly in cases of implantation failure. Although the effect of fibroids varies depending on their size and location, a thorough and personalised evaluation is essential to determine whether treatment could enhance reproductive outcomes.

As Dr García de Miguel points out, identifying which patients will truly benefit from intervention is key – always prioritising a gentle, minimally invasive approach that preserves the integrity of the uterus. This careful and considered clinical strategy is fundamental to offering effective, safe and respectful fertility treatments.

One of the most notable advantages of radiofrequency treatment is the reduced waiting time for embryo transfer, which can typically be carried out within 3 to 6 months after the procedure, compared with the 6 to 12 months often required after conventional surgery.

Technology in service of your dreams

The implementation of this system has been made possible through collaboration with JJP Hospitalaria, a company specialising in advanced surgical solutions, and is part of Tambre’s ongoing commitment to integrating the latest technologies to directly benefit our patients.

“This tool helps improve both timings and outcomes, while reaffirming our mission to care for women’s bodies with sensitivity, clinical insight and innovation. The fact that this patient can now move forward with her fertility journey thanks to this intervention is the best news we could share”.
