Leading sperm bank in Spain

Tambre has had its own sperm bank for over 40 years

It was the first to be set up in Madrid and is also the most experienced and pioneering in Spain. Since its creation, our sperm bank has been a vital part of the clinic, as it has allowed us to help create new families. Thanks to the selfless contribution of donors, together with the experience, processing and storage work by the Tambre team, we are able to obtain high-quality semen samples, guaranteeing the safety and suitability of each donation.

At the sperm bank, we not only store semen samples from our patients but also all semen samples from donors

That is why we receive requests from patients from other national and international clinics who are looking for high-quality semen samples for their fertility treatments.

If you are interested in becoming a sperm donor, Tambre provides a safe and professional environment. Our highly qualified medical team will guide you through a complete selection and evaluation process to guarantee the quality and safety of your donation, respecting your anonymity and confidentiality at all times.

What is a sperm bank?

A sperm bank is a specialised facility that allows us to store sperm samples at low temperatures for long periods, so we can use them in fertility and assisted reproduction treatments.

The process of freezing spermatozoa is called sperm cryopreservation and requires the use of tanks containing nitrogen, which allows the samples to be frozen at -196ºC.

Before storing the samples in these special containers, we have to prepare the semen sample in a special way by adding cryoprotectants. This substance helps to minimise damage to the spermatozoa during the freezing and thawing processes.

Once we have the sample prepared, we distribute it in several straws that we identify with special labels and register before freezing, in order to know the exact location of each straw inside the nitrogen tank at all times.

Do you want to become a sperm donor?

To be a sperm donor at Tambre, you must meet strict health criteria

It is necessary for the sperm donor to be between 18 and 35 years of age to ensure the quality of the sperm.

No transmitted diseases such as HIV, hepatitis B and C, or syphilis, and no family history of genetic diseases.

In addition, we will conduct a thorough medical and psychological evaluation to ensure the suitability of the donation.

You will provide informed consent and, by law, at the time of donation, you may not have conceived more than six children in Spain.

Do you need to request sperm for patients?

Tambre’s sperm bank is also available for patients from other public and private clinics, both national and international, who are looking for high-quality sperm samples for their fertility treatments.

The procedure for requesting a sperm bank specimen can be done online using our forms or in person at the centre. In all cases the information requested will be the following: contact details, destination centre, blood group and RH, phenotypic characteristics (skin tone, hair colour and texture, eye colour, weight and height etc.), race or ethnicity.

Ideally, the request should be made when the stimulation of the treatment begins so that we have enough time to select the most suitable donor and prepare the shipment. The request should be made at least 48 hours before the transfer if it is to be carried out in Madrid or 72 hours before if the transfer is to be outside Madrid.

The semen specimens are transported in tanks specifically designed for the transfer of biological samples in liquid nitrogen. These containers are in turn transported in safety packaging, all of which is sealed to prevent tampering with the samples during transport. At Tambre we follow strict handling protocols to maintain the integrity of the samples at all times.
