Sperm freezing

Sperm freezing is an option for men who wish to retain the possibility of having children when the time is right, preserving their unaltered sperm for future use.

This measure may be necessary for health reasons, as well as for fertility treatments.

What is sperm freezing?

Sperm freezing is a process in which semen is collected and stored at very low temperatures (-196°C), using liquid nitrogen. This process is done to preserve the viability of the sperm for an indefinite period of time.

Only the patient can decide the fate of their frozen sperm. When it is necessary to use it, it is thawed under controlled conditions and prepared for use in assisted reproduction techniques, such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF) or artificial insemination. Sperm freezing is a really valuable option if we want to preserve fertility and have a chance of fatherhood when the male is faced with situations that put his reproductive capacity at risk.

Although age is not a particularly important factor, it is advisable to perform sperm cryopreservation before the age of 45.

In which cases is sperm freezing suitable?

IVF treatment

If the man cannot be present on the day the eggs are obtained in IVF, it is necessary to keep the sample frozen for use at the appropriate time.

Medical reasons

If cancer treatment is expected to compromise fertility, it is advisable to cryopreserve sperm for future parenthood.

Prior to vasectomy

Prior to performing a vasectomy, sperm freezing gives the man the opportunity to be a father in the future.

Low sperm quality

When sperm counts are very low, it may be advisable to accumulate sperm from different ejaculates.

What is the sperm freezing process like?

At Tambre we have our own Andrology laboratory, as well as a team of specialists to carry out the sperm freezing process with the best guarantees. Our advanced cryopreservation treatment ensures high sperm survival after the thawing process.

On the first visit to Tambre, during the appointment with the urologist, we carry out a complete male fertility study to identify possible problems and thus offer the best service. We will also perform a blood test for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B and C.

The semen sample is collected in a sterile cup under the most hygienic conditions. Beforehand, it is advisable to abstain from sex for 3 to 5 days.

The sample must be delivered to the clinic within an hour and a half of being taken.

The semen sample is analysed in our laboratory to determine its quality and to confirm if it can be frozen or if it is necessary to provide a further sample in order to have a sufficient number of spermatozoa.

After preparing the sample for freezing with cryoprotectants, we distribute it in different straws so that we can store it divided into small doses, we are then able to use them in several treatments.

The samples are then frozen at liquid nitrogen temperature (-196°C) and stored for future use.

Tambre has its own sperm bank

Clinica Tambre has the oldest sperm bank in Madrid and one of the oldest in Spain. Over the last 40 years, we have been adapting our laboratory in line with the progress made in assisted reproduction.

Having our own sperm bank at the clinic offers several advantages, such as quality control and quick access to samples.

Thus, at Tambre we guarantee high quality standards for semen collection, processing and storage. This includes monitoring the quality of the frozen semen and ensuring its long-term storage.

Furthermore, as we have our own semen bank, we have access to samples at all times, which reduces waiting times and simplifies the process.
